^I may do that instead^
I would prefer the eggs hatching and remain within the area. I have read the lays, and discovered that boxies are a special concern species. Not threatened or endangered, but still protected. I will alert the propers and see if I can get some help with protecting the nest :)
A co-worker informed me that her son discovered a Box Turtle laying eggs while walking their dog. I was very happy to hear this, because box turtles are very scarce in Southwest Michigan. I live on prime woodland and wetland areas, and have never seen one in the wild.
The turtle was found on...
My family wasn't too happy with my choosing a tortoise as a pet, but they really warmed up when he would hurry over to eat a mess of dandelions out of their hands :D
I recently replaced the dirt in my tort's enclosure, only to see the place crawling with small ants today in my room. I will change it as soon as possible (both for the tort's sake, and because I don't want them in my house!), but out of curiosity: do ants (non-fire or biting ants) pose any...
My Russian has always been a conservative basker-- never shows any skin when he's just chilling out in his enclosure. Lately I have been seeing him with his neck fully outstretched, laying his head on the ground.
Its strange behavior for him, but is it any cause for alarm?
Thanks, Crazy. Tonka is an adult russian and I haven't had any trouble with him flipping over. I really like the sponge idea, too.
I am sure regular dirt will be fine, too. I have read that mixing water with dirt and letting it sit in a container (or was it the actual enclosure?) for a month...
I am about to kill all the dirt in the world. I've tried at least 3 different substrates from pet stores and none hold up well. The current substrate I am using has turned practically to dust, which can't be good if my tortoise is breathing it in.
So tell me, is it very unwise just to use...
What sort of substrate would you recommend for a tortoise who will be kept indoors for the winter? I am looking for something that is commercially available (say at Petco, Pet Smart, Pet Supplies plus..).
I picked up some info here, my tortoise is trying to hibernate, as well. Hasn't tried totally yet, but he's been very active. I'll start leaving the lamp on longer :)
Thanks so much. Tonka has been more active since I cleaned the enclosure and replaced the dirt. Since his last two baths, I haven't seen him scratching at his eyes. But I will still check into the MVB, thanks a lot, guys :D
Thank you very much, Skittles. I will probably take a trip to Petco/Pet Supplies Plus/PetsMart perhaps Wednesday (I can usually find whatever I'm looking for at one of the three).
The light is a compact UV bulb and was suggested by an employee at Petco. I watched a few video's this evening...
Cvalda- Tonka hasn't scratched himself, he merely rubs his eye with his upper leg.
Crazy1- I use a regular UV lamp, can't say which ones, though-I've long since tossed the boxes
In the last couple of days, I've noticed my Russian's left eye has been bothering him. It looks as if the eyelid gets stuck, and you can see the skin underneath.
I've been thinking of reasons why this could happen. First of all, the substrate I used was a couple of months old. It was composed...
Hi Heather,
I'm Trent, and my RT (Tonka) had a similar spell over the summer when I first bought him. I've always known lots about tortoises thanks to forums like this so I thought I had the prime habitat for him. But he was apparently stressed by the inital move and I had a difficult time...
I should also tell you- that the Snapper that laid these eggs was run over by a car nearly two years ago. I saw it myself. As I got out of the truck to pull it off the road, some a-hole (pardon, but I was PISSED) ran it over in a tiny car. Luckily it survived, but the lower shell was noticably...
Its wonderful. I've loved seeing those huge turtles crawl up from the swamp and rip up the backyard. In fact, I believe the turtle in the first picture laid these hatchlings, since the other nest seems still intact. I cant be sure, because the pictured turtle layed her clutch while I was sleeping:
