I bought 10 bags today, pretty excited to get some drainage and appeal to the dirt, not sure why it took me years and years to realize I could use this
Its bare dirt (earth) right now, sand is different though. They have been outside for years but as time goes on the dirt becomes more compact since you cant grow grass in it since they eat it all
What substrate can I use for a large outdoor enclosure besides dirt (need to be able to buy in bulk)? I would love to be able to use something that would naturally work its way down in the dirt to loosen it up like mulch does (I know I cant use mulch), my "dirt" gets pretty compact not allowing...
I guess I am mainly just thinking they eat all the grass in the summer, so technically their food is cut in half. Do I need to make up for it with other food now or do tortoises just eat less during the winter due to this being the case in the wild even?
Ya I dont like growing vines cause we already have a few kinds that are out of control and pretty tough to tame. I tried the grass hay, man its a good deal too but they dont love it. We still have grass growing so once it slows down maybe they will like it, seems like a best case scenario if...
I have 2 that are growing pretty quick, and I need more outdoor food sources. I have mulberry, strawberry, cactus, hibiscus, aloe but I wouldn't say any of those are "fast" growers. They mainly eat the grass outside, but coming into "winter" (Florida) grass growth slows down to maybe half speed...
So, I want to try and start feeding hay, I cant grow food/grass fast enough for my sulcatas even in Florida. My local feed store has orchard, timothy and alfalfa blocks and for the price it seems like a steal IF my big guys will eat it. Are any, or hopefully all these ok to feed? Any better for...
No this is a small spot, the enclosure is about 15'x15' (tortoise is still a little guy) and the dead grass spot is maybe 3x3 or 4x4. If it were any kind of bugs I think it would spread, I think its just a spot that is laid/rested on more than the rest. But grass spreads, so I would like to keep...
I have about 30% of my grass thats less than great in my sulcata section of the yard. I dont fertilize in it cause its not a huge section and dont want to risk it. Is there a safe section fertilizer I could use and pull them inside for a few days until it water into the ground?
All 3 pictures/cactus are from different sources, I was told they were all "Spineless Prickly Pear" but they were like $2 so I just bought from a few places and figured I would keep the best (they all lived and seem good). Anyway, just making sure they are all safe for the sulcata tortoise...
I live in Florida so it rarely gets below 75, but my sulcata tortoise (3 years old, around 8") is used to indoor heating which was on one side of the cage most the time so I assume he liked the heat.
Anyway, the outdoor enclosure has a small dog house but I need some sort of 100% waterproof...
75 at night most days, some nights between 70-75 but we wont see anything below 70 for a long time lol. Ya I figured I would bring him in on any cold front, ill figure something out in the time being, need to research some ideas
Obviously when winter comes I will fabricate something with the handful of 30-40 degree nights, but 90% of the year we are between 70-95, do I need to add a heat source? (I would look but I am posting from my phone and cant find that main thread)
