    Staying buried

So Clyde had been in his new enclosure for a week and he hasn't come up unless I dig him up. I notice that as low as he is digging that the heat isn't penetrating all the way down. I am thinking maybe that is why? I am thinking of putting rocks under the substrate so he can't dig down so deep...

Tortoise buried in new enclosure. Should I dig him out for his daily bath?

I moved Clyde into a new enclosure. He promptly hid and buried somewhere and hasn't come out the rest of the day. I normally bathe him every morning. Should I try to figure out where he hid and unbury him or give him time to adjust first?

    Outdoor temperature question

So I have been watching the outdoor area I have been considering for Clyde. I have found that most of the area is in the 70s and 80s where he would be. There are two areas, one that gets up to 115 and one that gets to about 108. Since he has ample area to get away from the extra hot places will...

    Building Clyde's adult enclosure

I have a Russian tortoise, about 70 grams living in a 2x4 foot enclosure. While it is plenty of space now, we recently moved things around and I'm planning on getting his adult enclosure started soon. It still won't be the 'ideal' size for an adult Russian but it will be as big as we can fit for...

Personal experiences with indoor enclosure plants?

So I know tortoise table has all the safe plants for torts but does anyone have personal experiences for good (or bad) indoor enclosure plants?

Do some Russian tortoises stay dark?

Clyde has a lot of dark coloring on his shell. Most adult Russians I see online are a lighter colored. Do some stay dark or is it normal for then to start dark then lighten up? Attached current Clyde pic because he's adorable should break 60 grams this week.

Clyde needs to be better at self starting

So Clyde is now about 8 months old. If I do but take him out for his morning bath he stays buried all day even with the lights on and during misting. He's gaining weight steadily, eats well, and is active but only if he gets a morning bath. Concerning or normal?

    Sick or no?

This will be long, I apologize. So the last week Clyde has been acting odd. Last Saturday the cats unplugged his heat bulb timer so the light didn't come on till hours later than normal. I also moved a few pots around in his enclosure that day. And finally on that day I gave him Mazuri food for...

Clyde may be trying to hibernate?

About 4 days ago my cats unplugged the timer so Clyde's lights didn't come on till about noon (for reference they normally come on at 7 a.m.). I still got Clyde up and did his normal soak at noon but since then he's been eating a lot less than normal. That same day I gave him some mazuri pellets...

    Question about weight

We have had Clyde about 3 months now (and he was about 3 months when we got him so right 6 months old). He is active, eats like a champ, and has a great little personality. We have seen a noticeable size growth since we got him. He just looks bigger in my hand now than when we got him and his...

    Soaking question

I've had Clyde about 3 months now making him a rough age of 6 months. Each morning when I wake up he gets a 15-20 minute soak. Some mornings he beats me awake but most of the time he's sitting bleary eyed at the front of his hide waiting on me. My question is two part. First, I've gotten moved...

    Behavioral question Russian vs sulcata

My fiance works in a mom and pop reptile shop and I am in quite frequently waiting till he is off. They have sulcata there that are right around Clyde's size (1.5"-2"). The sulcata are a lot more active than Clyde. Is this normal? Clyde is normally most active in the morning then again about mid...

    Tiny Clyde update

We have had our tiny baby Russian Clyde for 1 month so far. It took a week or two but he's settled into a morning routine. Each morning after the lights come on he comes out of his humid hide and stands at the entrance where he waits until I come pick him up for his morning soak. On his way to...

    Still just adjusting?

We have had Clyde since last Friday, he is about 2". Our routine is bath within 30 minutes of the light coming on. He stays in the warm bath for about 15-20 minutes. Then it's back inside the enclosure in front of a pile of food. Every day except Friday he ate at least a bit. From Sunday on he's...

Question on baby Russian shell shape

Picture of Clyde during his bath this morning. Are the little V bump lines down the middle of his back normal? I looked though some pictures of others Russians and didn't see it but they were larger than Clyde. Hard to explain what part I meant so zoomed in on it.

Today I received a tiny package in the mail

My baby Russian, Clyde, came from tortoise supply this morning. He got a nice soak them stomped around his home a bit before settling into the humid hide for a nap. So far he hasn't eaten but he did drink and have a poo in his arrival bath so all in all he's doing well so far!!

    Baby Russian setup, too hot?

At the very hottest point of the basking area I'm getting 105 on my digital temp gun. That heat is only about the size of a penny, the rest of the basking area is more in the 95-100 range. Since it is such a small area will that be ok or should I move the bulb back some?

    Lighting/UVB question

Are there any pros or cons of using an all in one heat/UVB bulb verses having two separate bulbs? I already have a fluorescent tube ballast I could use for uvb but I was wondering if there is any benefit of having it separate? This is an primarily indoor enclosure for a 2-3" Russian tortiose...

Are these plants safe, and suggestions needed for safe but less interesting plants

I got this plant from a co-worker is it safe for a Russian enclosure? Also, I am planting edible but maybe less interesting than normal plants for enclosure decorations. Anyone with live plants, what kinds are your torts less interested in? I've heard spider plants are a good option and maybe...

    Hi from Oklahoma! (Picture heavy)

Hi everyone!! My name is Kelsea and I live in Oklahoma. My finance and I live with my parents as they are getting up in years so I help them out. We both have a big passion for animals and we have a lot of different pets. We are looking to add a tortiose (probably a Russian) sometime in the next...
