    Tortoise Flipping

Wow, I somehow missed these last few messages! Thanks for all your responses! It is encouraging to know that Hermann's tortoises are good climbers and that my little friend may get better at flipping himself back over. It is a great suggestion about the foliage and plants in the enclosure to...

    Tortoise Flipping

No, I don’t think so... On the weekend we were leaving the house and I went back to check on him, fill his water and bring food. I saw him heading for the back corner and next time I looked 30 seconds later he was upside down and not even trying to flip back!

    Tortoise Flipping

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. I will add a bigger plant and a piece of wood. You’d think he would figure it out after ending up helpless and upside down a couple of times!

    Tortoise Flipping

Thanks for the reply! Here is a picture from the beginning of summer. There are more plants now, and a large area to the right that you can’t see, including shade and a wooden house that he sleeps in. The problem corner is the back left corner, which has lots of plaintain and as of this...

    Tortoise Flipping

Hello! My 1 year old Hermann’s Tortoise has a large 6x8’ outdoor enclosure. Lots of sun and shade and no shortage of food (plantain, clover, dandelion, pansies etc). We often find him trying to crawl up one of the corners of the enclosure and we have found him flipped on his back several...

    Hatchling Hermann's enclosure

Hi! If anyone could provide feedback on my 8 week old Hermann's enclosure I'd really appreciate it. It is 39" by 22" of floor space. The tray of the cage is just over 7" deep and there is 2" of substrate (the baby is about 1.5" long). He is still small enough that he could fit through the...

    Adopted Russian

Thank you! I appreciate this information. Our outdoor enclosure is about 6' x 8' and has two heavy lids on hinges made of a wood frame and thicker gauge chicken wire. But I have always wondered how people who have the really large enclosures that are not covered cope with potential predators...

    Adopted Russian

I've just adopted a mature male Russian who was brought in as a "stray" to a local animal services. Can anyone make an educated guess on age or whether he is captive bred/export? Is there anyone in my area (southern Ontario, Canada) or in the northern States that has experience housing...

    Not one but two...

Hi, I'm not sure if this is a debatable topic but it's certainly a debate I have been having with myself for days and no closer to a resolution. After a lot of consideration and research I decided to purchase a Hermann's hatchling, which I've arranged to pick up in two weeks. In the meantime...

    New to Tortoises...

Thanks for sharing all this info... were the other two tortoises you mentioned also raised from captive bred babies? I'm wondering if the amount of time you spend with them as they are growing makes a big difference too.

Thanks for your reply! Were any of your female leopards raised from CB babies?

    New to Tortoises...

Hi Everyone, Lately I've been researching like crazy everything I can find on Mediterranean tortoises. I've owned many reptiles, including a Reeves turtle and an Eastern Box turtle, but have no previous experience with tortoises. I am kind of in love with Hermann's but have been trying to look...
