I found a large wooden crate, turned it upside down on a rubber matt in the stall in the barn... stanfiled heat matt in winter and they do just fine...

Well, that does sound easy! But you have a barn! ;) :p
for those of us without horse stall or barns, we have to invest the $ into building the mini insulated houses. ;) :tort:

Yeah It has to look like an awesome house to keep the wife off my back lol. I don't have a large property so no where to stash it away.

just wanted to add that we are right at the $550.00 mark including all the electrical, building materials and paint for our 4x3x2 box and its being built with the labor of love!!!
I love building the boxes, I just don't have time. Like anything else, you either do it yourself, or hire someone to do it for you. There are lots of "handymen" for hire around SoCal. Should be an easy build for anyone with any carpentry skills. I'd be happy to explain the fine points to anyone building a tortoise box.
Thank You Tom. Yeah I just hired someone and gave them a link to your build. Cool thing is they have 14 tortoises and never have been on this site. Hopefully he becomes a new member.

Go to a shipping place and see if anyone is selling any wood crates, there are tons of them out there that are free and made of 100% plywood.
