    Gender guess please.

Thank you so much for helping to determine that the Greek (Zeus) and Hermman's (Hermie) are both males. I have not recently witnessed any mating or agression behaviors but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. I am assuming that I should consider seperate housing. I will post a picture of their...

Trying to determine gender on 4 tortoises.

Thank you. Any information on how I can determine their age on a best guess? I was told 3-5 years but I am wondering if they might be older. Also, what is the best living situation for them while indoors during the winter? Best substrate to use? Is feeding once per day too often?

Is this a girl or a boy?

Thank you for your reply. I will ask the previous owner but my guess is that this turtle has never hibernated. I could be wrong. I think it has been kept indoors in Ontario/Canada. It does stay buried all the time at one end of the enclosure and has done so since it came here in August. It was...

Is this a girl or a boy?

Thank you for the reply. I had not heard that it might be a 3-toed box turtle before. When it came here it was living with a Florida box turtle that was mounting it regularly. Maybe that one bit off his tail. Any suggestions for diet and general care to make things better for this guy?

Is this a girl or a boy?

I recently adopted some tortoises and boxes turtles from someone that no longer had time for all of them and chose to donate them to our educational facility. Sadly, one of the first things that happened was that the very lovely Florida box turtle escaped from a covered enclosure (turtle...

    Gender guess please.

This Greet Tortoise is one of several that was recently donated to our nature centre. We are reseaching everything needed to give them proper housing and diet. We need to do indoor housing as the climate is already too cold for them to go outside (or at least I would think so). We are...

Trying to determine the gender of this tortoise

I have adopted 4 tortoises and 1 box turtle and I am trying to determine gender of each. I am also looking at their different needs with regards to diet, habitat (size/substrate) and water for drinking/bathing. I am also looking for ideas on indoor winter habitat as we live in Canada and it is...

Trying to determine gender on 4 tortoises.

From what I can tell I have 2 Russian, 1 Greek and 1 Hermann's tortoise. They were donated to our nature centre. We are researching everything necessary for their care. I have many questions. Due to our climate in Ontario, Canada, they will need to live indoors for the winter. We are...

Western Hermann's vs. Eastern Hermann's Discussion thread

RE: Western Hermann's vs. Eastern Hermann's What do you suggest as a diet supplement? They are currently eating fresh greens and I don't see how that will ever beef them up. If there are certain fruits and vegetables that are ideal I would like to offer them. Do you think that #4 is a Greek?

    Which tortoises do I have?

I have recently been taking care of some tortoises and my brain is boggled trying to keep them straight. The owner told me what they are, but one of them seems like it might be something else. Maybe someone here can help. 1. Russian Tortoise 3-5yrs old, M, Hercules 2. Russian Tortoise, 3-5yrs...

Western Hermann's vs. Eastern Hermann's Discussion thread

RE: Western Hermann's vs. Eastern Hermann's Thank you. I am starting to feel confused about a bunch of them. I am supposed to have 2 Russians, 2 Greeks and 1 Hermann's - but the shell of one of the "Greeks" does not match the other. Also, the 2 Russians look very simliar to the one that is...

Western Hermann's vs. Eastern Hermann's Discussion thread

RE: Western Hermann's vs. Eastern Hermann's Hello Chris, I can not see your diagrams on my computer, but I am trying to figure out which sub-species of Heramman's I have. I am wondering if you can help so that I can create specific educational materials for this tortois? I am also wondering if...
