Humidity in the enclosure is always >80%. His enclosure is outside on our porch. Most of the time I don't even have to worry about it, but we do get a few dry spells where I'll have to re-hydrate his substrate to keep it above 80%. That's rare though.
I bought him from Arizona Tortoise...
It's only 4' x 4'. I have had plans drawn up to build a bigger one as he outgrew this one...but seeing as how he hasn't really grown, I haven't needed to build the bigger one. I think someone here told me he'd probably outgrow a 4' x 8' enclosure after a year or two, so I was kind of stunned...
We've had our Sulcata for almost a year and a half, and he hasn't grown much at all. I live near the beach in Florida so he gets plenty of humidity (It's never really below 80%). He is soaked at least 3 times a week, but usually more. He eats a pile of *food probably twice his size daily...
The only bugs I've ever had end up in our porch enclosure that bothered me were ants. I've seen the occasional roach, silverfish, etc. A little gross-perhaps, but I always figured it's part of a tort's habitat to be "sharing" it's space with other critters anyway.
We have had Barnibus for 6 months and he's probably slept in his hide maybe 3 or 4 times total. He doesn't even have a designated "sleeping area" in that he'll just plop down and sleep wherever, whenever. This is, of course, after he's done playing Daytona 500. I never realized how active...
Yeah it has a laser. I just point the laser at whatever temp I'm wanting. It seems to be within 2 degrees or so anywhere I point it except under the basking light.
I finally got around to buying an infrared heat gun on Amazon, and it's a wonderful little tool. I have one question though. When I point it at my basking spot, if I point right at the center, it will jump up to like 125 degrees, whereas if I move it even a cm or two, it will drop back down...
My enclosure is 4 x 3 x 2, but I keep it outside on the porch. Granted, I live in Florida but the temps have been dropping into the 40s lately. I have a 100 watt basking light and a 100 watt CHE during the day, and then I run two 100 watt CHEs during the night and my temps stay fine no matter...
Oh and Tom, those three threads you posted, have been invaluable! I actually printed them about a month before we purchased and have had them at the ready all the time!
Thanks guys! One more question that I don't really see addressed: Not WHAT to feed, but how much to feed. I've seen varying responses from "however much they'll eat in a 20 minute span" to "an ounch for every inch of the carapice" to "feed them every other day as much as they want."
What...
HI, my name is Adam. I live in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (think Jacksonville, for reference.) We got my daughter Piper a Sulcata she named Barnibus for Christmas. We ordered the tortoise from Andrew at Arizona Tortoise Compound, and we couldn't be happier! Barnibus seems happy and healthy. My...
First of all, this forum is AWESOME. I can't believe how much I've read and learned about tortoises over the last couple of months.
So we are getting a sulcata hatchling for Christmas, shipped from Arizona Tortoise Compound. I have already built a nice 4 x 8 closed tort table that we will be...
