I don't know why I never noticed this before! Thanks! I feel better because she's definitely preparing to pack it up!

Is loss of appetite before hypbernating normal?

.....For a desert tortoise in So Cal. I just don't remember her eating so little right before.

Advise on moving hiberbnating Desert Tort.

Thanks everyone, she did well. She remained more or less "out of it" for the 2 hour drive, in a box with some of her dirt and leaves. When we got home it was about 4:30 so getting pretty cool. I placed her in her new little den and she didn't really move. She's all closed in now. It's really...

Advise on moving hiberbnating Desert Tort.

Thank you yes this is all helpful. I do want to say she is currently not in a box but an enclosure outside with brick walls. I will be lifting her body out of there to put in a box for transporting, not moving a box that she is in already. Thanks!

Advise on moving hiberbnating Desert Tort.

Moving from colder inland San Diego County where it's been in the 30's lately to Anaheim where it's more like 40's. She is in hibernation now. I do have the option to leave here here in SD for another 3 or 4 weeks, which takes us into February. In that past she comes out in March. Should i...

    Pre-Hibernation eating

Hmmmm I can't remember: Should my desert tortoise be not really interested in food right now? She stayed in her house for about 5 days straight and I was sure she had started hibernation but now she's out this weekend. Not interested in the food I'm putting out--that's normal, right?? One...

    When to soak?

Lickity spent her first full day outside today from hibernating. Just soaking up sun, no interest in food yet. I expect her to be out for good at this point--all this week is supposed to be warm. When should I give her a soak/drink? ASAP? Wait a couple of days?? Thanks! -C.

    Anyone awake yet?

I checked on Lickity-Split yesterday. She had knocked one of her small barracades down but made no more attempts and stayed in. I looked inside and she was way at the back, but I took the barracades down just in case. A couple of hours later she was at the doorway but still not coming out...

    I'm frantic--Lickity got out

Terryo, I don't know your story about Izzy. Wish I could help you. There is somebody else around here who has lost one---I'm in San Diego area. Not you is it? I have seen fliers up for weeks, very sad. Thought I was next....*sigh* As far as the directional question: the horse trail behind...

    I'm frantic--Lickity got out

I FOUND HER!!!!!!! I walked the trail as the sun was starting to hit it and sure enough she had come out from somewhere, about 5 houses down. Extreme relief....doesn't describe how I feel. Thanks for reading and yes Shelly I was plannning on doing Craigslist--so glad it didn't come to that...

    I'm frantic--Lickity got out

thank you Laura. Yes i think she wants to hibernate, she was moving so extra slow this morning when she came out. I need to remain positive and hope for the best but i'm so upset. If anybody else has heard of the south east thing please chime in!

    I'm frantic--Lickity got out

Any suggestions please write to me! I left at noon today and got home at about 4 and cannot find my desert tortoise Lickity Split. There are signs that she may have pushed her way under a hard metal screen that we have temporarily installed where the fence broke. I can't tell for certain--the...

    Hibernation Temperatures

I am wondering when I should expect my desert tortoise to hibernate. Living in her previous home for the last 30 years, Orange County California--average low temps in late October are the 50's, and daytime highs in the 70's. I'm remembering that it was around this time she would hibernate...
