Long story short:
I have a tiny and neurotic female Chihuahua named Tsuki.
She is very sweet and very odd. For example she will only drink water if someone is holding the bowl in their hand. And if two ceramic bowls touch each other, that klinking sound will make her run away. I use ceramic because the metal bowls also frightened her.
She has always had issues with food. And it took me a long time to find something that she would eat without issue. It is NUTRO ULTRA CHICKEN PATE. (She must eat small, soft food because of an inbred condition affecting her teeth and jaw.)
About 1.5 years ago. This food disappeared off the local shelves. Off of CHEWY.COM and off of Amazon.
I began "making her own food every 2 weeks. Freezing it and giving her a portion each day. Defrosted and warmed.
It is 1/4 bag of shredded carrots, 1/2 pound of ground turkey. 1/2 pound of ground chicken and one packet of the good old Nutro that I've been able to find at a Filet Mignon price. I ad it because she likes it and I'm worried a bit about missing some trace elements.
Some times I ad a few ground up green beans. Some kale. Etc. But this is the basic makeup of the food.
She loves it. She spins in circles as I'm placing it in her bowl.
I know that she will eat it and she has remained healthy and her weight is maintained.
The Nutro may become more available but I feel good about making sure that she is eating fresh, real food for the most part. So I'm going to keep doing things this way for now.
