His might be a silly question, but how much do these guys sleep?
Tom said:This is always a tough one to answer over the internet. Babies sleep a lot. Heck adults sleep a lot too. Its all relative. The problem is that lethargy can also be a symptom of serious problems...
If your temps and set up are good, your tortoise is eating, and, most importantly, you got your tortoise from a good source where it was well hydrated and started right, you should be fine. You'll have to raise a few to really get a good idea for what constitutes "normal" in a general sense.

In general terms, you should notice periods of activity and periods of rest occurring around the same time each day. My tortoises live outdoors, they are active in the morning and in the late afternoon. They will sleep during the hottest part of the afternoon which usually lasts about 5 - 6 hours.

Tom said:It sounds to me like your little guy is just fine. You can feed all the stuff in the Dole Spring Mix, but make sure that there is not a lot of spinach in it. Some spinach once every week or two is fine, but not every day. Endive and escarole are to of the best Grocery store foods. Do they have Smart and Final stores back your way? If yes, they sell a Santa Barbara Mix that is very good too. Really the best thing is to try to find safe weeds and grasses. If grocery store foods are what you just gotta do, then go to tortoisesupply.com and check out a product called "Salad Style". It is basically pulverized grasses and you sprinkle some on top of the grocery store greens. This will give your tortoise some much needed fiber and grass in his/her grocery store diet.
