It can and does happen with box turtles too. There are different opinions as to what causes it. I currently have three Florida siblings that I raised from babies. One of them was a voracious eater. She was always stealing the food from the others and never seemed to have her fill. Even though I am very careful about what I feed them (only 50% protein) she started to bump up. I immediately slowed her down, but of course the damage is done (although it's not very bad.) The other two are smooth and beautiful. So ... although I'm sure there are different reasons that some turtles/tortoises get it - in this case I believe she was fed too much too fast.

In box turtles, I have seen more what I would call "shell deformities" than pyramiding. I've never seen a box turtle that looked like a typical pyramided leopard or sulcata.

I have seen some - even though you're right - most of them end up with horrible shell deformities. Here is a pic from Tess Cook's site showing pyramided box turtles. (Scroll down)
