Hello, I'm new to the forums, and tortoises. I have built a 3 1/2' by 3 1/2' foot double layer tortoise table, and am planning on ordering either a hermann's or a greek from tortoisesupply.com in the next couple of weeks. I'm also planning on building it a pen outside once the weather gets a little warmer. My question is which will be better for a first time owner? I've done a lot of research, and their care seems to be very similar, and I've also decided to get an adult, since this is my first one. So what are the pro's and con's of each species?

Hello and Welcome :) I don't know the pros and cons. I don't own either. However, I see a lot of Russians on here that seem to have great personality and funny.

I have an Eastern Hermanns, very sturdy little character and very easy to care for. Males usually max out at 6 inch or smaller if it is the western variety, this makes them very manageable for the beginner in my opinion.

Well I changed my mind and decided to get a russian, because their care seems a little easier for a beginner, just ordered it and it will be here on Thursday, got my table all set up, and my outside pen is almost done. Super excited!
