they work nice but over time i have to scrub the algae off is this normal?

Oh yeah. Mine have a nice coat of algae. You can scrub and bleach them if you want them clean. I rinse mine daily, but leave the coat of algae. Its a plant. It purifies the water as it sits. The rinsing just makes sure there is no poop, dirt or detritus of any kind sitting in the water fermenting.
