Rescue source said female, Vet said male.
Please confirm?

That is an awfully short tail and short tail usually means female.

Not so sure when it comes to Russians...but I'd have to venture that he's a she!

Thanks everyone! I accepted what the vet said, until I started looking at RT identification pics, then started to wonder.
My signature has been changed (must have known somehow when I chose neutral names)!

Looks like a female but could be an "under endowed" male. Such males are not that uncommon in Hermann's tortoises, the Russians closest cousins. Female Russian tails are usually look very much like a nub with a tiny tip on it. Can you post a few from the side with the tail extended?

It looks female but as GB said looks can be deceiving, has she/he got a small hook on the end of the tail?
If so its a male, if not its a female.

I don't think it is a hook, just a nub.

I was hoping for females (anatomy looks the same for both), so I was a bit surprised by the vet's comment.
