So I've had my tort for 2 years now and was wondering how healthy he really is. I would ask my vet, but he is stupid (he told me I could feed my tort dog food) I obviously know better than my vet but I want to make sure I'm taking good care of my tort and if not, what I can do better. As of right now he is outside during the day in around 80° weather and I mist his enclosure at least once a day and provide lots of shade. At night he is inside at a temp of about 75° He is fed mostly dandelion greens, mustard greens, kale and clovers but I give him the occasional carrot or apple as well. he also gets soaked in lukewarm water at least once a week.2015-08-31 20.34.41.jpg 20150831_155749.jpg 20150831_155902.jpg

Those pics are a little old and ever since my vet trimmed his beak, he has rested with it open. Here are some better pics of him from today. I've just never seen it as a problem with his beak because he eats so well.

@Yvonne G has seen a lot of tortoises - what do you make of this beak, Yvonne? Is the bottom jaw misaligned or dislocated or was it just cut too short?

Once a beak is allowed to grow so it starts looking like a duck's bill, it's very hard to get it back to the correct shape. The vet trimmed off quite a bit, but it should grow back. As it grows it needs to be watched to see if it needs corrective trimming again. A Russian tortoise beak should look like this:
