Hibernation/Sleeping

Can someone give me key indicators of whether a three toed box turtle is burrowing down to thermo regulate and/or sleep or is trying to hibernate?
Its currently winter where i am

They burrow in the summertime to escape the extreme heat and mosquitoes. Hibernation only occurs in the winter months, so you can consider it brumation. Totally normal in the heat of the summer.
