My son recently received a Russian Tortoise and this site has provided a ton of info (much better than the pet-shop did). I do have some questions but I'll post those over in the Russian forum.

My Tortoise is a Herman and he/she is about three years old. So he/she is not old enough to sex.

He is a Russian, no idea how old but about 5" front to back of shell. I think it is a boy by shell shape. No name yet cant decide on a good one!

Apparently he females have tucked in tails and the males have long tails. and that the males have a slight dent in the bottom of there shell to make it easyer to mount onto the female. but they only develop them when older.

(Just so you know, the male Russian tortoise does not have the indented plastron you mentioned)

He has a fairly long tail but he does keep it tucked to one side or the other

Yeah I have a Herman so they are different but I thought that it applied to all Tortoises but thanks for letting me know

have you got the sheet with all of his details on it that you show the vets, that should tell you his age.
