Hey everyone!

Should I offer my russian tortoise hay? I've read a bit of conflicting information on it. I'm still very new to owning a tortoise, so I'm trying to do whatever I can for her!

Russians are broad leaf weed eaters, not grass eaters. It is very unlikely that your russian will eat dry hay, but it won't hurt anything to offer it. Just don't let the hay get wet and moldy.

Blending the hay and mixing it in with chopped, pre-wetted grocery store greens is a good way to add fiber to the greens if you can't get weeds and leaves to feed.

I use hay in my outdoors houses for bedding with my Redfoot torts. I've never seen them eat it, either, but hay has it's purposes.
Good tip on it getting moldy! It will.

My russian tortoise seems to really like hay. I give him a mix of many different types of hay. Is there any hay I should stay away from?

This happens once in a while. As long as he's eating other stuff too, this should do no harm. Its just unusual.

I prefer orchard grass hay and bermuda hay. Some people like timothy hay.

What type are you using?

I was very happy to see your question as I was confused also.
