Today marks my pet's 2nd birthday: Jiumi and Chiumi. It was 31st December, 2014, when for the first time in my life, I got a chance to pet these wonderful living beings.

It has been a great 2 years so far, watching them, learning from them, acquainting them and basking the sun with them. I look forward to the many decades to come.

Happy Birthday Jiumi and Chiumi

Awww, happy birthday little ones. So glad you got the bug. Just be careful. It doesn't stop tugging on wanting more of these great creatures.

I'm going to stick with them because I don't think I have the resource, time and energy for more. They are a delight to have, but at the same time a great responsibility. I don't get comfortable with the idea of leaving them alone, and go out of town.

When I got them 2 yrs ago, Chiumi (the bigger one) was given to me telling it is a special one, because of its nail (You can make it out in the pic). In the last 2 years, I've had instances where his/her nail has served being special, in that it got itself entangled in the grass because of it, needing parental care.

Curly nails like that are showing you that the tortoise is suffering from MBD. Metabolic Bone Disease. He needs calcium-rich foods and real sunshine or light from a GOOD UVB light. You can trim the nails, but do it in very bright light so you can see the line of blood and not trim up that high. Once you have them trimmed (it may take more than one time), you can then monitor the nail growth to see if it continues to curl or starts growing straight - a good indicator that he's getting him calcium and UVB.

Thank you. I'll pay more attention to its nail. I have ensured they get their share of the natural sun light. Perhaps I need to find good natural source for calcium that they are willing to chow.
