    Emergency Kit - Power Outage

Last night we lost power and, since it was about 65 degrees in the house I was concerned about keeping Cruz warm. Turned out the power came back in a couple hours and his enclosure didn't get below 70. (I covered the areas where heat could escape and added a blanket over the whole thing for...

    Vivarium, yay or nay?

I think it would be fine if you can get one big enough. I know they are better for keeping heat and humidity in than an open table. They are also more aesthetically pleasing, which may be important if you keep your tort in your living room like I do.

    Poor conditions

Hubby and I were at a pet store yesterday in NY and they had a Russian tort there. Then I noticed they had another 29 gallon long tank with about 50 sulcata hatchlings. While the conditions weren't horrible seeing as it's a pet store, I can't help wondering the odds of survival for these...

    POST YOUR CUTEST TORT PICS

Cruz, checking out the human who delivers food too late on the weekends. She didn't ask him for permission to sleep in two days a week!

    Cruz's Outdoor Enclosure

The corner blocks are from Home Depot and are called Oldcastle Planter Wall Blocks. Below is the link. I actually saw these on a post from a woman in AZ, I think, with a Sulcata. Crush, maybe. Ironically, when I looked into them I found that are made by a sister-company to the one I work...

    I eventually backed down.

I have an English Bulldog. His eyes are usually closed when he sleeps, but his snore is proportionally louder since he is probably twice or more her size. The question is whether his gas is proportionally smellier?

    Cruz's Outdoor Enclosure

With the large tree there are lots of shaded area throughout the day. In fact, I think we will build one in the back yard next year where there is more direct sun light. We are on a dead end street so we only get local traffic. And we don't leave him out over night because of raccoons, skunks...

    Poor "Socata" in Michigan

What are the signs that indicate he has the beginnings of MBD? There seems to be lots of talk about pyramiding but not MBD.

    Russian Tort Travel

Cruz just took a road trip from NJ to IL and back. I used a big Tote with bedding on the bottom. We took a light fixtuure and used a basking bulb during the day and a CHE at night. I also had him out in the sun when possible. We provided a hide as well. During the travel times we didn't...

    Tortoise-Safe Bug Killer

So, like many others, we have flying bugs in Cruz's enclosure. They are small and I would guess they are gnats. I know they are not dangerous to Cruz, but in this case they may be. My husband hates, loathe and despises bugs. If someone could rid the world of insects he would be all in even...

    Cruz's Outdoor Enclosure

Kept it simple for now since fall is here. Will probably add another hide. Will add plants in the spring.

    I eventually backed down.

Super cutie! I happen to love the smoosh-faced breeds, having had an English Bulldog for almost 10 months now. A couple pieces of advice... A tired dog is a well-behaved dog. Consistency! Don't let her do anything now that you don't want her to do as an adult. And, know what special care...

    Tort Temper Tantrum

I am trying to get Cruz to eat more variety and have started adding herbal hay. Yesterday was the 4th day that I included it with his greens. He has been eating sparingly and trying to eat around it. He was eagerly waiting for his food dish so I mixed it with some grassland and mazuri and...

Keep in current covered enclosure or own room?

Tom, Those cages were clearly not designed for tortoises but I have seen many that were designed for tortoises and many would say they aren't suitable. Looking at these cages, what makes them unsuitable? I am not trying to be argumentative, just want to see if I am getting better at...

    Age to Stop Growing

Ok, Cruz is settling in nicely. He's eating, basking and moves around a bit. I have been soaking him daily since he has some pyramiding and i want to be sure he's drinking. Last night a white clump in the water that looked like it would be slimy if I were crazy enough to touch it. Tonight he...
