The pic on the right for sure looks like a male. Not positive on the other one
However, do you know if they were housed together? They should never be housed in pairs. Besides the bullying, the stress of living with another tortoise can make them mature slower than they normally would.

Well I picked them up and the owner said they had been housed together and living happily. Obviously I’ve got them now and ready to seperate them if needed

Sadly that owner is terribly wrong. Unless they lived on acres of land where they barely would cross paths, they lived under stress and constant bullying. Not only can that play a part in maturing, it can eventually kill one or both.

Literally about to separate them now. As I am pretty sure both male and I have witnessed one nipping at the other.

Yes, both look like males. One has matured more slowly than the other one probably due to years of stress and bullying as Wellington mentioned. After you separate them, the male characteristics (larger tail, concave plastron) of the tortoise at the left should begin to become more noticeable over time.

I'm thinking these are Russians. If they are Russians, the plastron will not concave on the males.

These look like Russians to me? Male Russians do not get the concaved plastron.

I am not sure of the species, but they may well be Russian Tortoises. The one on the right with the larger tail appeared to me to have a slight concavity which is why I mentioned that characteristic at all.

One of the does appear more rounded on the bottom and the other quite flat.

The previous owner probably gave you other incorrect info as well. Give this a read for the correct care, housing and feeding info:

I hear ya. That info is for people new to the forum. Not necessarily new to tortoises. There is so much wrong information from so many sources out in the world, and we usually spend several days trying to catch new members up to speed on all the correct care info. It is often harder to convince new members that already have some tortoise experience because they have already been reading and practicing the wrong info for so long. That is why I compiled all that correct info into one easy to link thread. Saves me hours and hours of typing every day.

In any case, you are welcome here, and I hope we can help you and your tortoises.

Thankyou I’m going to go through it now as actually you are most likely right and set in my ways and do some stuff wrong.

The fact that you are here shows you care and want to do the right things when it comes to their complete care. It's great your here we all look forward to being part of your tortoise journeys. It also sounds as if you like learning to even though not a newbie..

They lived happily together. Otherwise known as a mexican standoff. 🙄
Honestly do not know how they kept them together I was stressed out within an hour of them being home just watching what was happening. 🙄

Definitely do at the moment I’m going through to find out how to house outdoors all year round. I won’t be hibernating this year as only just got them and they’ve never been hibernated before so I guess I’ll get on with it for now an start to get everything ready for better days for them.
