Hi,

So two questions that involve two separate turtles of two very different ages/sizes (not in same aquarium)

First: When can you sex an RES? At what age/size?

Second: My 15 y/o RES turtles (both male as per the vet) have medium-sized claws; the thing is they're like half the size of the male claws I see in online photos? But they are still quite/much longer than a female's claws (also based on online photos)... why? Is there something wrong with them? The attached image is NOT mine, but a good reference; their claws end at the red line

By the time a red-eared slider is about 4" long, the males will have started developing a noticeably larger tail. That is the first secondary characteristic you will see. The long front claws develop later over time and do continue to become longer as they age. A young male will not have the extreme long claws you see until later. Perhaps 5-8 years or so.

Can you post photos of your turtles including the front claws? Do you suspect that they are female?
