This is a good idea, however, Russian tortoises need a lot of space, I mean a LOT of space, so if you start adding 'things' to decorate the habitat, you're making the space smaller. So you need to start with a pretty big habitat. I would say an adult Russian tortoise should have at least a bookcase with the shelves removed (or an outdoor habitat) in order to be happy. Then you can add driftwood, river rock, a couple hiding logs, a tortoise figurine...actually, the sky's the limit!
I agree with Yvonne. By the look of the enclosure in the pic, it already looks too narrow. Of course it could be the angle of the pic. If you post a pic of the enclosure, along with the dimensions we could help you out with size or decorations better.
I think I already answered this in your introduction thread, didn't I? If not, let me know and I will give you some idead. By the way, love the name Toby (so much so I named my oldest son that).
This is a stock photo of the enclosure I own, it's a 4ft-4ft enclosure with a 3ft wall, I spoke to the reptile specialist at my local vet and she said his enclosure seems fine for a tortoise of his size and because it is only him in there, ofcourse I don't want his enclosure to look cluttered, but he rarely spends time in it, he normally has free reign of the house and is only in there for sleep and when I'm not home, but ofcourse I want the best for him and I am more than happy to listen to your suggestions, in an ideal world I would house him outdoors, but Scotland isn't renowned for its weather
Thanks in advance for all your support and replies
Are these sold on the UK eBay ? I have seen some nice enclosures made and wished someone here in the US would start a business here making wooden enclosure. I tried talking hubby into it but he didn't go for it. He probably figures I would end up with more tortoises.
As far as decorations fake plants, rocks, garden statues , etc. My tort is like a buldozer I should of named her CAT so I don't put live plants in there.I love that enclosure it would be awesome to put two side by side and a bridge to connect the two.
Yea this was purchased on the uk ebay,it is only a temporary home for him at the moment, there was a smashing one I seen which was the same dimensions but two tier. However that bridge idea does sound very good and I just done the maths in my head and it would be cheaper to buy another one of these, the lamp equipment and do that bridge idea
I do beleve there is a very good market for custom made boxes. And the people who I talk to on ebay (who are also the people I purchased this box from) said because of the range of boxes they make they are never short of business
If you you bridged two together you could remove the large hide and put it in your outdoor enclosure . This would give a larger area for the indoor enclosure. I can understand why they stay busy . All the enclosures I have seen were very nice and you can tell made by a true craftsmen. I love the unique shapes etc. they offer.
