I'm new to this and only considering getting a horsefield tortoise, but first I want to know all that I can know instead of asking when I actually have the tortoise, I've spent the last couple of days researching the right enclosure, lighting etc. I've decided I want to get the solar glo heat/uva bulb instead of 2 separate and I want the exo terra bulb holder (do I need small, medium or large)? The large aparently can hold up to a 200w bulb, so what size wattage bulb do I need? I know it's probaly difficult to tell but as a guide what should I use? What's the difference? Sorry there will probably be alot of questions coming over the next couple of weeks, I'm hoping to slowly have everything before I actually get a tortoise, and be familiar with all the equipment so that I know what I am doing and create little stress as possible moving it in!

The Powersun is favored by most over the Solar-Glo. I'd start with the 100 watt. I use the ceramic based 11" fixtures from Home Depot. They work much better than the pet store stuff and they are cheaper too.

Only YOUR thermometer in YOUR enclosure can tell you what wattage you'll need. There are a variety of factors to consider. Your tortoises behavior will tell you a lot too.

Please look for a captive bred tortoise. You will be much happier with the outcome.
