Since we have specific terms in our languages denoting genders of animals:
Bull/cow
Hog/sow
Rooster/hen
Buck/doe
What names denote male or female tortoises???

that's a good question
i've also wanted to know how to tell what the ratio was like a 1.0 or 1.1
I'm not sure what you're asking but if you mean how to denote gender: 1.2.6 would mean one male, two females, six unknown or juvenile (too early to tell gender). Is that what your question was? Hope that helps.
Yes, and ascott has helpfully pointed out an existing thread on the forum.yeah that's my question so the first 1.0 would be male and 0.1 would be female correct?

Correct! The third number is sex unknown. 0.0.1
but the first number will always be males correct? that's what i was confused on so first number males second number females 3 number is unknown sex/ to young to tell
I prefer calling a male a sire and a female a dame. Just my opinion
I meant it as a joke, well almost Thats what I would use if I bred tortsSorry, not a dame. Or were you making a joke? Jokes are always welcome in my house but the reason for the sire and dam designation is that is how tortoises are officially listed in zoological and professional SSP (Species Survival Plan) studbooks.
There is no other designation differentiating male and female tortoises that I have ever heard of.
