Hey guys I was wondering what substrate y'all use in your Pancake Tortoise enclosures? I've heard so many different things and everybody has a different opinion. In mine I use coco fiber on half and large pebbles on the other half which are large enough mine can't eat them. The Pancake Tortoise enclosure at the St. Louis zoo is big and all they have is large pebbles as substrate. Thanks guys

I don't keep pancakes, but several friends do. Any of the damp substrates work fine for them. Coco coir, orchid bark, cypress mulch, peat, plain soil, regular yard dirt. Like most tropical species, it helps them grow more smoothly if temps and humidity are kept up. In my opinion, a humid hide, or several, is a must.

Thanks a lot. He has a humid hide but ive only seen him in it once. He pretty much hides in his favorite rock slate cave and comes out and basks a few times a day and eats a little and then goes right back to his rock cave.
