Hello and welcome. You will soon be glad you found us BEFORE getting the tortoise and doing a bunch of "research". Start right here, and look for the care sheet at the bottom:

To quote King Arthur of Monty Python: "What do you mean? African or European?"

There are Greek spur thigh tortoises and African spur thigh (Sulcata) tortoises. They are VERY different animals and while some of their basic care needs are similar, they do have different needs if you want the tortoise to be properly healthy and happy.

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad you are learning about the proper care of a tortoise before you get one. There are plenty of people here on the forum from the UK to help you get supplies when and if you need them.

Actually, the sulcata isn't a spur THIGH. It's a spurred tortoise, african spurred tortoise to be exact.

Hello and welcome - I live in Devon, and we have a Hermanns tortoise, who is now nearly 23 years old. He is a wonderful little companion, but I wish this forum had been around then for advice. Yvonne and Tom, for example , have a huge range of knowledge and experience. Don't pay any attention to what pet shops and old literature tell you - it's often completely out of date.
Best wishes from Angie

lots of great info in TFO and there are some excellent FB groups - some just for Greeks and some for Russians, Hermanns and Greeks as the care is the same
