hello...i am hoping to buy a tortoise on friday for my girlfriends birthday. i've ordered all the bits i need and have spent hours reading information on this forum (which i must say has been extremely helpful!!). i went in to Pets at Home today to find out how straight forward it is to buy a tortoise and it turns out i need to read a book and take a little test. bit nervous i must say about the test.....does anyone know what the questions might consist of??

thank you for your time.

we never had a test and we got taylor from one of there stores last week, infact they gave us the wrong info about lots f things, so maybe there staff should retake this test!!

they do ask if the torts house has been set up for at least 3 days and what the temps are, may ask what you feeding them and if you got a water dish, food, lights

well i had to buy this book for £10 and then i need to go back for a test and if i pass they take the price of the book off the tortoise and then i give them back the book. if i fail i guess i just get a refund on the book!! i guess it's good as it means no just anyone can impulse buy a tortoise but as the reptile specialist was not there i have no idea about what the test consists of!!

Thats quite weird - I've never heard of that! But I guess its definitely a good thing to test you before you buy a tort from them. :p

Never heard about that one, and I think it's VERY cool that the store asks for a test so the people that buy the animals are educated. I'm assuming they'd ask questions such as diet, uv lighting, space requirements, temperatures, and such... is it going to be a test for tortoises in general or by species? Just read up on what the book says either way, it's a win/win thing :)

well i arrived and it turns out it is not a sit down test. they give you 2 pages of questions to fill out and you can take it home with you. if you get anything wrong then they go through the correct answers with you.

Well at least you don't have that pressure now. I always feel pressured when a test is involved. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I like the idea of the test, even though it seems there is no such thing as failing. This pet shop at least wants the owners to think/learn about what a tort needs. You have to have the basics, Lighting, heat, food, supplements and substraight!
It seems the pet stores lesson for a buyer is to research and learn! I commend them for that. Most pet stores sell all pets to all people. Given that statement, no one person has all the answers, and only the pet suffers......and maybe your wallet.
