Without having to go vets, unless that's the only way.. How else can I cut my Russains nails? Can I attempt a file? It's just I know they have veins in their nails! It's been way to cold to let her out and let her run, filing them on the floor!

Yes, if you are sure handed and confident that you can gently complete a bit of a nail trimming then you can do it....if you are not the type that is calm in doing this then a vet would be advisable in the trimming of nails.

You can also place a bit of slate in pushed down into the substrate a bit in a part of the enclosure that your tort visits and this will offer a little opportunity for some filing on their own....

It's the same as trimming a dogs nails, look at see the blackish bit in the middle? That's the quick, avoid it like the plague. Ascott is right though, slate makes a huge difference, I have chunks of it around Walters house and his nails stay nice and short.
