We need a tortoise vet on this board!! it would be AWESOME!! like an "ask the Dr." thing.
We have quite a few. However diagnosing and giving advice over the internet without properly diagnosing or physically seeing the animal can jeopardize their license. It's an unfortunate world of use happy people in this world. Advice can't even be given. I have a RVT(registered veterinary technician) license but don't worry too much giving advise. Because I don't have much to lose. I don't know all medications nor can describe them. Hope this helps.

I didn't say wild animals, I said torts.

Torts are wild "animals"....well, they were designed to be....a shame when folks equate a wild creature with not being one any longer....

ok. Sparta went to the vet today. great place that specializes in exotic, and reptile. she said sparta will forever have a "unique" shell. it wont grow back. but he looked good. weight was good. we are doing an antibiotic shot every 3 days for 3 months. and when he is home, he is grounded to his indoor habitat, until next summer. poor dude. I have to bath him in a betadine solution once a day, then apply a topical cream she prescribed call, silvadene cream. apply that after his daily betadine soaks. extra calcium powder on his greens, and kept on newspaper, not bedding. so thats that, and I am SO GRATEFUL for his halt and ALL your support. thank you!! this site is an asset to us torti lovers

Betadine should only be used once or twice, studies have shown it inhibits white cells and delays healing. It's a great initial treatment, but not something that should be done daily.

I would do the Betadine the first day or two and do nolvasan after that. Nolvasan is a great product and a little gentler. I've used it on some healing Red Ear Sliders with great success. Members here also recommend it for shell rot and other shell injuries.

Agreed with above. As stated I would use the beta dine sparingly. For very rough injuries it's of but just ounce or pre investigative or procedural purposes. Chlorohexadine or nolvasan works great. Just make sure before applying the silvadene cream when the areas are completely dry. I would also use a towel(very thin one not a fluffy one) instead of newspaper. The ink weeps when wet, and can be ingested when he eats. We know torts can be sloppy.

I was trying to clarify that I was only referring to wild torts when I said they live shorter lives in the wild, I wasn't referring to all wild animals because Yes, there are many that live longer in captivity.

Sparta has been running LAPD all over his habitat. And chowing down on his special treats of dandelion heads. Hr went to get weighed today. When I brought him to the vet on Thursday he weighed 370 grams. Today he weighed in at 390. So. He I'd definitely going to be fine. So HAPPY!!
