Mold on mulch

Is there a good way to prevent mold from growing on my cypress mulch? I recently put in sphagnum peat moss with cypress mulch on top of it, I noticed that there is some mold growing under the water dish when I take it out to change the water. There doesn't apear to be any mold anywhere else as of yet. Any suggestions?

It is probably wet as well as warm under the dish, mold heaven. Just move the dish once in awhile, and let it get a bit of air there.
