I just received my copy of South American Tortoises by Vinke/Vetter and learned something new. Compare these two forelimbs and notice the difference :

First picture is a Northern and second is a southern. Being from a dryer climate the Southerns have developed a spur-like scale to hook down vegetation.

Both Cherryheads and Gran Chaco Redfoots have that scale.
