Tuleo is really never given much opportunity to walk on cement and I have noticed that his nails are (what I feel) crazy long. Both his indoor and outdoor oasis are filled with dirt and plants and I have been trying to give him some time to walk on the cement with me in order to file them down. Is there anything else I can do? Will they file down pretty quickly this way? I think I might put a piece of slate in his enclosure to see if this will help as well...

Thanks for the help/tips!

His nails aren't long at all. They look just fine.

Their nails are very hard, much harder than a dog's nails. Concrete walking will wear down their feet faster than their nails. We often see tortoises with bloody, rubbed raw feet, from living on a concrete surface.

Do they? *whew* Okay. Thank you! I was looking at him this morning and thought they looked crazy long. Glad to see they are fine.

Good to know. He never really walks on it so I assumed it would help. Do I need to put anything (slate or somesuch) in his oasis to help with nails or just keep on keeping on?

You don't need to do anything. His nails look perfect as is.

So... stop being a helicopter Mom, again?!! LOL

Thanks Tom!

Naw. You can hover. Its good to be aware of everything your tortoise is doing and going through. We are supposed to spend time enjoying them. Its just that in this case, all is good and you don't have a problem.

Looks perfect to me.
Tidgy's are much longer and probably do need a slight trimming.
But Tuleo is a perfect looking specimen.

How long does it take for them to get bloody feet? Mine walk around outside in the grass and on the sidewalk for about 30 minutes a day

Varies a lot. Depends on their weight, the abrasiveness of the concrete, what percentage of time they spend on it, etc…
