Picked this up at the home depot for thirty bucks it works pretty well best I can tell you can't use it through glass or through the mesh on the top of an enclosure but gives you a good idea of the temperature at your tortoise level

You are correct, cannot read thru glass or screen. But they are very helpful, I got a Chinese one for under $5 and it works well.

No they wont shoot through anything , but I like mine. Good way to tell , if yours has the laser light where the light hits is what you are getting the temp of ! At least that's the way mine works !
