My name is Kylie. I got a Leopard tortoise hatchling for my birthday in May. His name is Itty Bitty. I'm new here and I look forward to all of the advice!
Please accept my CONSTRUCTIVE criticism with an open mind. I don't mean to hurt your feelings, I just have the baby's best interest at heart:
The tortoise is starting to pyramid (grow a bumpy top shell). It would be in your best interest and in the baby's best interest to read the care sheet at the top of the leopard tortoise section here on the Forum. We have new and cutting edge info that you won't find in outdated books or outdated web sites. The baby needs to be set up in a humid environment. You'll see what I mean in the care sheet.
Welcome, tortoise forum is awesome and the people on it most helpful. My daughter has two Aldabaras, male and female two Red Foot, male and female and three Radiated not sure if that's spelt right but sex in known.
So confusing because I just brought him to a tortoise specialist for a runny nose and was told to lower the humidity. Since then, he has gotten better. Thank you for your advice!
If you have a humid environment, but the temperature isn't warm enough (at least 80F) all over the habitat, then they get a runny nose. So double check the temperature all over the habitat.
Also, stress causes a runny nose, and it is very stressful for a tortoise to be moved from one place to another. The runny nose caused by stress usually goes away on its own once the tortoise realizes he's safe and is going to stay in one place.
The temp under the heat lamp is usually around 95 to 100 degrees (not sure about the other side of his enclosure and the humidity is usually 50 or 60. I keep him in a cement mixer tub but I was just reading that it's better to have a closed inclosure to keep humidity in. I was looking into tortoise houses, not sure if that's any better. I soak him once a day. Maybe I should start soaking him more.
