effects of pyramiding?

I've been seeing so many posts about pyramiding, and I'm just curious what the effects of pyramiding on the tortoise are?? Does it hurt them or affect their quality of life?

In most cases its only cosmetic. If there is also Metabolic Bone Disease, as there often is in severe pyramiding cases, that can be really bad for their health.
