So sorry for your loss! This is exactly why the "oldest" members of this forum tell the new people to keep baby torts indoors until they gain their size, and/or make secure ESCAPE AND PREDATOR PROOF outdoor enclosures. This is why baby torts spend most of their time hiding. In nature they are FOOD to other animals and large numbers of them don't live to their 1st birthday. Again, I am so sorry you had to learn the hard way. Please accept my sincere condolences.
