Hi Charlotte:

Let's send a shout out to @HermanniChris. He's very good at I.D.ing the Testudo species.

...also, tortoises are "species" not breeds. And we'll need to see his underside including the tail to know if he's male or female.

Well! A Hermanni. Aren't you the lucky one. And you've had him for eight years. He looks very good. You've taken good care of him.

No (on the age), but from the smoothness and condition of his shell, I'd say he's pretty old. That looks like a male tail.

Definitely NOT a male. That is without a single doubt, a female. She's elderly, probably over 50 and is Testudo hermanni boettgeri.

Those hermanni are so confusing when it comes to sex, especially when they're getting on in years. Male tails are ginormous and very long, but female tails are ginormous and not as long, so it makes gender determination difficult without a comparison or decades of experience with different torts. I'll stick with the margies, thank you. Margies have got to be the easiest tortoises in the world to sex. Males are big and narrow, with long and obvious tails. Females are short and stout, with short tails. But yeah, that lady has seen some things in her day. Elderly tortoises are my favorite. They always have these incredible personalities shaped by decades of time developing their expertise at testudinal existence.
