Has anyone tried to keep their LEO moist by using ALOE on them instead of spray water, using the principal Facial Mask :D?

eg if u spray water on your face it dries too quick and you lose even more moisture bt if u use aloe it actually seeps in and hydrates the skin more.

just curious if it wld work on tortoises aswell it was my girls idea thought i wld share it !!!

If you were to try it, I would only paint the growth spaces between the scutes with a Q-tip. If you apply aloe all over the whole shell you run the risk of having your tortoise over-heat. Also, it might attract ants.

This is what I do. Put a lid on the enclosure, moisten the substrate really good, weekly or more often. I recommend coconut coir, and pipe in a warm mist humidifier. Warm water soak every day. Also check out the threads at the bottom of my post. It really isn't hard to start growing new smooth growth. Now that my leopard is a year old, I let the enclosure dry out before I moisten again. I soak every other day, and I let the humidifier run one time daily. It runs for about 2-3 hours.

The aloe vera is sticky. Your substrate makes dust. The dust clings to the sticky aloe vera, coating the tortoise, causing him to overheat because he can't thermoregulate with all that stuff on his shell.

I wouldnt do that to my leopards. That would make me uncomfortable. Water humidity only.

Not sure what you are talking about? If you mean because heat wasn't mentioned, well I was assuming he did some home work and knows about the heat and lighting. Besides it is in Tom's threads. Other than that, don't know what you are talking about.

Among other good lotion products, there is Vita-shell. Several people on the forum, including us, use it regularly during certain seasons of the year.

Like Yvonne warned, the Vita-shell will also attract ants if you keep the tortoises outside or don't spray in your house.
