    Sulcata Digging

We have two 13 year old male Sulcatas that have free range of our backyard. They have a covered and heated doghouse available to them when it gets too hot we shut the heat off. Lately they have both been digging, I assume it is because they are hot and trying to find a cool place to hang out...

    Respiratory Infections/Disease

Thank you! That was very helpful. Good to here a little wetness in the eyes and nose and some whistling is normal! Everyone is usually so quick to assume the tortoise is deathly ill when they hear this. Haha. I will try and post some pictures in the next few days!

    Sulcata enclosure ideas...

Hi! I was given two male sulcata adults recently and my dogs are too hyper with them so I cannot allow them to roam freely in the yard at this point. Maybe when they get used to them things will be different, who knows. I bought some fence posts and wrapped some PVC chicken "wire" (it's plastic...

Higher incubation temps produce more males?

I am not a breeder, just a sulcata PET owner but I am curious about something I have heard... Is it true that if you incubate eggs at a higher temperature that you will end up with more males and that breeders will do this to limit the number of females produced so other people cannot breed...

    Respiratory Infections/Disease

Hello! Can anyone direct me to a good article regarding Respiratory Infections or Disease in Tortoises? I cannot seem to find any information about this such as, how they get it, what causes it, and how to prevent and treat. If I type in anything about a watery eye or nose I am directed to tons...

    Upper Respiratory Disease/California Desert Tortoise

I have a contact (I've attended some of their meetings) at the Chino Chapter of the CTTC. I emailed him this evening and he is always really quick to get back to me. Im sure they will find her a great home! :) I still have a feeling the runny nose was from dusty sand. Since she has had it since...

    Upper Respiratory Disease/California Desert Tortoise

I live in Chino, CA. The plan is that this person will bring me their tortoise this weekend because they are moving and have no other choice. I do not believe I will keep it, I should just stick to the sulcatas for now. So I planned on contacting the California Tortoise Society and seeing if...

    Upper Respiratory Disease/California Desert Tortoise

Thanks a lot. How is the disease spread? Is it through feces? Or any contact? I do have quite a large yard so I guess I could make two separate enclosures. But it might just be easier to only have my sulcatas, that way there is no risk. I'm very attached to my little guys I would hate from them...

    Upper Respiratory Disease/California Desert Tortoise

The current owner did not get a blood test. The vet only saw the runny nose and prescribed the meds. It has been 6 months since then and there has been no symptoms, the runny nose went away. She said that was the first and only time in three years that it happened. When I found out the substrate...

    Upper Respiratory Disease/California Desert Tortoise

Thank you. I would not mix them but they would end up treading across the same grass just a different times. If I get him tested and he does NOT have the microplasma germ then does this mean he will not contaminate my sulcatas? Is the runny nose a sure sign of this? Argh! This is making my head...

    Upper Respiratory Disease/California Desert Tortoise

I'm hoping someone can help me understand this better. I have a customer at work who is trying to find a home for a 3 year old CA Desert Tortoise. I know that if I take him I will need to get a permit and all that jazz. My question is about Upper Respiratory problems. I currently have 2...
