I like to check how smooth my tortoises growth is along the scute margins once in a while just by touching. i noticed on different occasions though my tortoise reacting uncomfortably when i used my fingernail and it got in the margins, so i stopped doing that.
Does this mean anything is wrong...
Yeah i believe it is to break in the bulb, since the next instructions are to move it 6 inches closer for the next 48 hours, and then 12 inches from the spot afterwards.
My main concern is the blueish spot of light, if anyone can provide insight on this.
I just bought 2 bulbs from lllreptiles, T-Rex active uv heat 100w. Just some question about this bulb since its my first time using them, and i've only heard good things. As instructed by a sticker on the box i'll be putting the bulb 24 inches from the basking spot for the next 72 hours. What i...
I've looked through the forum to try to id my own plants and looked throught his website http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/weeds_intro.html. The seedling pictures look similiar for a lot of plants. I'd like to double check with you guys.

Thanks for the tips, definitely will start feeding some vegetables. Also will probably buy some mizuri. Seems popular. He only eats the zoo med stuff if its on my finger, i think its the colour of my skin that shows up after a few bites that tempts him. I let him bite me once, quite amusing.
I think my tortoise is underweight. He is approx 85 grams. My scale only increments 5 grams. The length of his shell is about 7.5 cms and 9 months of age. Looking around i think his weight should be around 100 grams or so. I feed spring mix. and once a week i feed zoo med grassland tortoise...
Had some shell questions i posted a while ago in the greek section. Didn't get much response so thought i'd link it here. Photos are included.
Shell questions
So I have some questions about my tort's shell. Not that i think these are serious but just curious and wanted to be educated on it.
First i noticed the parts of her shell that stick out seem to be growing, which I'm happy to see. They are semi transparent though like finger nails. I'm...
Will sand pass through its system? I made a 2/3 coconut coir 1/3 play sand mixture for the little guy but he seems to want to eat a lot of it. I quickly pulled him out when he took a bite and put him in my original cypress mulch bin. I thought maybe he wouldn't do it again so i put him back and...
Thanks for the advice. I've read about sand mixtures too and i actually bought playsand before I went to go buy the little guy/girl at an expo. I was actually expecting russians but there are practically none in Canada, but this greek looks so much better!
I think i might go a coir/sand or...
Yes i'll work on getting some more variety in its diet. the bottom part of the substrate seems quite damp still since opening the bag, about 3 days ago. from the looks of the substrate today it was wandering around and then burrowed again where its a bit moist and under the basking area. Around...
So I currently have an approx. 8 month old golden greek. Still unnamed and refered to as "it".
I was wondering what some of you do when choosing names:
Do you have a predetermined desired gender/name and stick to it until sexing?
Do you decide a gender/name based on observing its behavior...
I'm using cypress mulch, and it has about 60% humidity. It seems the underlaying substrate retains some humidity.
It was burrowed deep under the lamp and the temp of its shell was 85F.
Basking spot is 95~F
Cool end is 70~F
There is no warm end but I am using a flood light. So the temp drops as...
So i started to notice my little tort started to sneeze constantly. At first it was just very few but by the third day it became quite frequent. I think it may have got worse when i gave it a soak. the water may have gotten colder after ten minutes because it started to sneeze.
There is no...
i'd like to add that today it was burrowed in its hide and the shell temp was around 78F. i took it out to soak and to hand feed at 4pm. It seems to eat quite contently but in small sessions.
It started to sneeze quite a bit. I think at least. Its movement is a sudden jerk backwards of the...
Thanks for all the quick reply and welcome!
Well the cool end is about 72F. I don't have a ceramic heat emitter in the middle so it it pretty much drops once out of the basking area. But i do use a flood lamp so maybe its 80F in a small area.
I believe the temps stay 70~72F at night. And...
I am a proud new owner of a golden greek tortoise. It's about 7-8 months old. First i'd like to mention the set up i have so i can get advice on waht to change.
Large rubbermaid bin (biggest i could find at walmart)
Exo Terra Solar Glo 160w (basking spot is 92, shell gets to 97)
