Hermanns grow quite a bit larger. Russians vary from 5 to 12 inches, females growing a good deal larger than males. Not an expert on Hermanns, sorry. :P I <3 Russians :P

I agree with Tom on the fact you should ask your nephew first, but if he gives the okay I would recommend topsoil and coco coir or just coir. :P I <3 Russians :P
