    Soaking during hibernation

My question is...necessary or unnecessary? I live in AZ so the temps are pretty mild. But we had a couple cold night this weekend, and Tortellini has burrowed himself in the ground. Last year when he did this, I unburied him and kept him in a box in the garage and soaked him every once in awhile...

    cold temps

Hi! I also live in AZ, down in Queen Creek. My Russian buried himself saturday night, and I haven't seen him since. He did this about the same time last year, and didn't get up again until about February. Just being a normal tortoise!

How much should I buy food-wise when I get my russian?

I usually purchase one bag of spring mix as his staple food, and then add on something different this week. This week I got kale, next week it might be collard greens, ect. That will last me a week. I don't know how you are getting him, but keep in mind when they change enviroments they can be...

    Tortellini's Outdoor Enclosure

I adjusted a few things...what do you guys think? He has 3 hides, plus a spider plant. I plant russian tortoise seed mix in the ground, but he eats it faster than I can plant it. He seems really happy, and doesn't try to constatly escape at all. The area receives a combination of sun and shade...

    Not Eating RT Grazing Mix

I would still give him a little store bought greens, maybe just cut down on the amount. But I have the opposite proplem. I can't keep any weeds growing, my piggy eats them before they even have a chance. LOL

    molting? shedding?

I have noticed the last week that the skin on my russian tortoise head is peeling. Do they go through a molting? His behavior hasn't changed and he is still eating and soaking. I soak him twice a week, and he has a water dish at all times in his enclosure. He is kept outdoors, and eats a variety...

    Tortellinis Updated Enclosure

Thanks for the info the DE! I knew it was safe for dogs to eat, and can help with flea and tick problems (which we dont have). We use it for ants and scorpions! I have tried to overlap the bricks so there is a lip. He is a little escape artist though!

    Tortellinis Updated Enclosure

What do you guys think of my updated outdoor enclosure for tortellini? I added a new hide, so he has a total of 3 hides (one on the left against the wall, one in the back, and then the log). The weeds growing are a russian tortoise seed mix, so he always has something to munch on:D. The dirt is...

Why do his hind legs go in and out?!?

I dont know the exact reason, but mine does that too. When he sees me in the morning he does that with all his legs and his head. I like to think it is cause he is excited to see me and get his breakfast. But I dont know the real reason. :P

Now he is a pig and eats every chance he gets. He still stays buried during the heat of the day (he has an outdoor enclosure), but comes out in...
