Thank you all for your replies! I will do daily soaks; yes, mosquitos are only attracted to standing water. A stream sounds like a neat idea; her enclosure right now isn't permanent so I won't likely install something but I could get a little stream up with the hose. Thanks again!
Hello,
I have a Russian tortoise who lives outside in my warm, humid southeastern backyard during the warm months. I know that it is a lot more humid than it would be in the desert (of course!) and it rains a lot more--even though I take her in if we're going to have a week of thunderstorms...
Here's a pic of the pen from a distance. As you can see, it's quite easy to lose her inside of it, haha! The ground is leaf mulch and she loves digging in it. It was super hot today so she was burrowed/hiding whenever I went out to check on her. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a picture...
And it's finished! Myrtle's been in it for about half an hour and is loving her new digs. I planted some clover, still waiting on the Testudo Seed Mix, and until then she's feasting on kale and dandelion greens. We're going to the gym right now so I don't have time to post pictures, but...
I'm afraid I don't know very much about treating torts with MBD, but it's obvious that she lucked out on finding you! (Or you finding her) Best of luck!
Hello,
I'm building an outside enclosure for my Russian, and while letting her roam around in the space today I noticed a big swarm of ants where she started to dig. They crawled over her but didn't seem to want to sting her. One got pretty close to her eye but she smashed it herself and I...
Thanks! That sounds like a wonderful idea; I'll definitely be planning on some hides as soon as I get the basic enclosure done. Good news is the trees in the middle of the pen - she usually burrows around the roots of plants and bushes as opposed to fences or walls.
