I have a Hermann's and live in Colorado too,Denver area. We remodeled our small backyard, all organic mulch with roses and other plants. Theo sleeps in the mulch behind the air conditioner. I was wondering if he could hibernate outside if the mulch was deep enough, as he tried too last year,but...
I have made my small enclosed back yard which is about 30x20 feet my greek tortoises's enclosure. He tried hibernating last year, but the soil was too shallow. How deep do I need to make my mulch,so he can do this safely? I also bought a tortoise heating pad,but have heard varying opinions on this.
Oh my he sounds just like my Hermann's tortoise Theo. My daughter had him for a couple of years at College and I thought they must have teased him because he loves to bite our feet, especially if we have bare feet and nail polish on feet drives him crazy.
He is about 4 years old now and finally...
Thanks, that was what I was worried about,he hates his tank, which is pretty big,bit maybe if I filled it with wood chips he could bury himself. I think that is what he has been trying to do lately,as he kept disappearing.
My 6 year old tortoise decided to dig a hole and hibernate himself about a week ago. He isn't really deep,so I am worried about him maybe freezing. Should I cover him with something or dig him out and stick him in his tank somewhere dark and cool?
Thanks
I have a Hermann's tortoise who decided to dig a hole in my small backyard and brumate himself.

Should I cover...
Hi,
I inherited, I think a desert tortoise from my daughter, who got him from a pet store in Kansas.
I think he is about 5 years old and his name is Theo.
We live in Centennial, Colorado,so I put him in a tank with lights in the winter. He hates being in this, and will turn everything over...
