Thanks for these comments. It is good to know that you think there are other ways. I especially like his photos of natural environments and accompanying analysis of how best to recreate them. I have spend a good deal of time working out how to apply his advice to my garden.
Photos of inside hide. Heat lamp and tubular heater which is on a thermostat to protect from very low temperatures. Slate now removed, comparison can be made to original pic at the top of this thread. Any advice on this? I am a little unsure if it is an ideal setup. Thanks.
I have this, expensive book but I really found it useful. He has very high standards, Reading the book makes me feel like a complete failure! He says that a tortoise can never be a 'pet' in the way other animals can.

Thanks for your comments, regarding my wooden hut, it is currently sat on a thick slate, do you think this should be removed so the soil can be directly accessed? ... It is currently very dry in there, the basking lamp drys it out a lot. Perhaps plants in there?
