Hi, they have some soil it came in a brick and I soaked it in water, I'm not sure what it was called and then the top is covered in a layer of bark chips. The first pic was of them outside I posted a pic further down of their enclosed which has an Arcadia mini D3 UV basking lamp. This is the only bulb they have on, I was advised this provides their heat and UV combined. I turn this off at night so wondered if they will be getting too cold as they have no heat all night? They do have a water bowl which I put them in every morning but they just walk straight out! I have also been spraying the enclosure a few times a day. All I have in my shopping list so far is spring greens and kale! Is there anything else you recommend so they have a bit more variety? I'm in the UK. I have ordered some tortoise seeds yesterday with weeds and flowers they can eat but I will have to wait for them to arrive and grow so will just have to give them salad from the supermarket until then, I was buying mixed salad bags but not sure if that is suitable?

My Georgie loves her food as soon as I put the fresh food down she is there eating it lol she does make me laugh

I am amazed how entertaining they are! I didn't realise tortoises where so active! They eat loads but don't seem to go to the toilet much, how often does yours go?

I am trying to add a video of the noise Sid makes but I am getting this message:

image.jpg

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm still concerned about the noise he makes. It may be normal for them, I don't know? but the other tortoise doesn't make any noise

I have a box turtle that makes a noise while breathing when she is "excited". When I first put her into her new larger enclosure last year she made breathing noises while she was checking out everything and roaming around. It's not something she does all the time, but will when she is excited and very active.

That substrate is probably coir, you don't particularly need the bark chips but if you have, I don't think it makes much difference. Its fine if its not on during the night, mine isn't. But if they have a humid hide to sleep in then it will be nicer for them. Do they have access to the water at all times? Its a good idea if they do. That's good that your spraying the enclosure. Im UK also and I tend to feed them that as a staple duet but also add other things that you can find in the garden(I will upload a food list for you soon) also a whole carrot once a month is good for beak trimming. Mix salad bags arn't particularly the best. Mine go loo everyday, I maybe find 2 or 3 blobs of poo(I have 2 torts)

I've heard others with RF tortoises mention a noise that they make. I think as long as the tortoise is eating and otherwise acting normal, I wouldn't worry about it.

That would be great, thank you. Yes there water dish is in there enclosure it is quite large but not very deep.

Do you think I should get something deeper? I have only seen Sid poo once and one of them poo'd outside but not sure which one as I didn't see! I've seen them wee lots tho when there outside. I can't really see if they wee indoors as it just soaks into the bedding but I have not found any poo and have had them for 2 weeks, is this a concern?

Thank you, that's made me feel much better he seems to be fine and acting normal although I have only had them for 2 weeks so I haven't much experience of normal tortoise behaviour! I will try not to worry about him! He eats loads, more then the other tortoise

Thank you, that's perfect although someone on here told me not to give them broccoli as it's bad for them? Everyone on this forum has been so helpful, I've learnt more in a couple of days here then looking online for 2 weeks!

Will there shells smooth out with proper care or will they always be like that now as they are 5yrs old?

The new growth will be smooth but the pyramiding won't go away. It will be less noticeable My female has pyramiding from me providing improper care when she was a hatchling :( I listened pet store and random websites before I found this forum. Now her new growth is coming in smooth. This is her to give u an idea of what to expect :) ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1407510532.736381.jpg
