I was wonder what a good begginer box turtle is, I had my heart set on an Eastern but found out they are illegal where I live and I heard the ornates are not good for begginers. I also like the three toed and florida would either of these be a good choice?

Yes, I think some of the other kinds of box turtles are more colorful. I didn't go looking for one, but one was given to me. none of my animals are going to want to beauty contest but that's okay. Keep doing some research and I'm sure you'll find a great one for you.

Thank you. Do you think a begginer could care for an ornate I've heard they are difficult? Is that true. Also could you keep them in an outdoor pen in pa. Sorry about all the questions.

All mine are outside but treat them like a rose how do people Pa. Treat a rose plant they probably cover the Rose with dry fallen leaves long before the first frost and snow . But the first year keep them in the house will you make the out door pen . The reason you keep them in the house to insure they are heathy and have built up their layer of fat to live on wile they bermate through the winter .

I have both and both are great, but I tend to lean more to the 3 toed. Caring for them to me seem the same, I haven't noticed that the ornate is anymore difficult.

I have 7-3 toed and 3 ornates. 3 of my 3 toed just do things that amaze me. They climb like monkeys, aren't one bit shy. They just seem to be a little more people friendly.

I like them too, both are a good choice. One of my ornates isn't scared of anything and has a tough guy personality. I think its just luck of the draw on what kind of personality you get with any animal.

That's a plus, and yeah they have some nice colors. My big male is named hulk because of his green head and colors, I think you can't go wrong with either one.

Thanks if you read above my favorite is the Eastern box turtle but they are illegal here. Sad though people take them out of the wild and sell them. I live in the suburbs in pa and I've never seen one.

I have 3 toes and love them. Just know if you get a baby expect it to hide for the for the 1st year or so. All box turtles hide as babies to keep from being eaten.

I have one that didn't really. She grew to be an outgoing, dominant type turtle.
