hi I have a baby sulcata about 3 months old. Only noticed recently that when it opens its mouth I can hear a faint squeak that sounds almost like a click whenever he eats or opens his jaw. Is this cause for concern?

Hello,

Short answer:
It might be.

Long Answer:
There are several reasons that a tortoise might squeak.
  • Males often squeak as part of a mating ritual but most tortoises don't mate until they are about ten to twenty years old.
  • Squeaking can also be a sign of a respiratory problem in tortoises. If you think your tortoise might have a respiratory problem, I would suggest doing some research on tortoise respiratory problems and looking for symptoms in your tort, e.g. labored breathing, drainage/discharge from the nose.
  • Some tortoises grind their beak after eating which often sounds like a squeak.
Best of luck!
