Silver stuff on my painted?

I have some silver stuff on my southern painted turtle. Can anyone identify what it could be? It is on his bottom shell and the side of it. Thanks!

Well, naturally, we'll have to see a picture, but my GUESS is that it is the top layer of keratin getting ready to shed off. When the scute lifts a bit, air gets under it and may look silvery.

My red eared sliders get like that before and after they shed their scutes. It's like a dark gray but shiny almost powder like substance. Is this similar to what your experiencing?

yes. They always shed around this time of the year, well my painted does!
